Walk Everywhere

Privacy & data

Walk Everywhere privacy: searches do not change the page URL. Copy search link copies a link containing the current guide’s exact coordinates, displayed address, label and radius, including GPS locations. Anyone with the link can see that location. Opening it searches for places at those coordinates without looking up the address again. Older address-only links still look up the address. It does not include your favorites, checklist, or stay.

When address autocomplete is active, typed text is sent to Geoapify as you type to provide suggestions. Requests wait until at least three characters and a 300 ms typing pause, and have a 10-second limit. Suggestions and submitted address candidates share one on-page picker. Picking a suggestion uses its address and coordinates directly. Submitted text without a picked suggestion is sent to Nominatim to request up to 5 address candidates. Device coordinates are sent there for reverse geocoding.

The resolved guide coordinates are sent to Geoapify (api.geoapify.com), the primary places provider. Find more in this category sends the current guide coordinates and selected category to Geoapify, one page per explicit request, with up to five pages per category for this visit. Extra results stay in memory unless you star a place. Check walking route sends only your guide origin and the selected destination to Geoapify for a pedestrian route. Routes are requested only when you ask, and cached in memory for this visit. No route is requested for fictional example places. Place-local hours use a bundled coordinate-to-timezone lookup on your device. No timezone lookup request is sent.

If Geoapify fails or times out, coordinates are sent to up to four independent Overpass operators on fallback: overpass-api.de, overpass.kumi.systems, overpass.private.coffee, and overpass.osm.ch (a regional Swiss service). Requests start with one operator. Backups follow if it is slow or fails. Cached guides also refresh this way. These geocoding and places services receive the location needed to answer your query.

Your browser contacts tiles.versatiles.org for the VersaTiles Colorful style, fonts, icons and vector map tiles. The map first shows images from tile.openstreetmap.org, with tile.openstreetmap.de as a backup. Those images remain if the vector map is unavailable. The viewed map area is shared with the active servers. Your browser also contacts unpkg.com for Leaflet CSS/JS, with cdnjs.cloudflare.com as a backup. Connection hints may resolve or connect to the API, tile, and library hosts when this page loads.

Place websites and phone apps open only when you follow their links. Google Maps is contacted only when you click Walking directions, which sends the guide origin and the place coordinates to Google.

This app never sends favorites, saved-place notes, checklist, or stay details to a server. Saved places include independent snapshots of their names, coordinates, source details and fetch times. They and your notes stay in localStorage, alongside guide caches and the last successful Overpass operator. Backups include saved-place snapshots and notes so they can be restored without a lookup. Named bases store the names you choose, exact coordinates, address, radius and local hours context in localStorage and backups. Saving or importing them makes no lookup request. Build guide here sends the saved coordinates to the existing places and map services, without geocoding the address. Export and import generate or read a local JSON file on your device. These file operations make no network requests. Lookup timings stay in your browser console. No timing telemetry is sent.

External services may retain requests under their own policies. No ratings or hours are invented.
